Aglaonema

Aglaonema are perennial herbs that can grow decumbent or erect. Most often the crown is comprised of wide leaf blades which are frequently variegated with green and silver colors. Plant stems that grow parallel to the surface of the ground may have roots at their nodes.

Aglaonema is a plant that is frequently used for interior landscaping. It is also called a Chinese Evergreen. Care of this plant is relatively simple and it can grow in areas without an abundance of light that are frequently encountered in offices or homes.

This plant is suitable for the majority of locations but it will not do well in full sun. Full sun will cause the exposed leaves to be scorched. The plant can survive in low light, however it will not have a robust appearance and will appear rather thin.

The fruit of this plant is a berry that is fleshy and red when ripe. This fruit is a single large seed with a thin covering layer.

Dieffenbachia Dieffenbachia

Very popular plant due to it’s attractive pattern and color. MBI produces this plant in 3” to 8” pots. Most common varieties are Camilla and Compacta. However, the hybrid varieties are becoming well received.

Dieffenbachia plants are perennials that have straight stems. They have alternate simple leaves that contain many flecks and white spots making them a visually pleasing indoor plant. They are popular house plants due to their ability to live in a low light environment. Dieffenbachia was named after the head gardener of Vienna’s Botanical gardens named Joseph Dieffenbach (1796 – 1863).

Dieffenbachia are commonly referred to as “dumb care”. This is due to the untoward effects it has on those who ingest it. It is called “dumb cane” because if it is ingested in sufficient quantity it can temporarily cause an inability to speak.

Dumb Canes do contain a poison, but it is very unusual for it to result in death. The plant contains many microscopic crystals of calcium oxalate. When these crystals are orally consumed, they can cause the mouth to become swollen and painful. In some instances, the swelling results in an inability to speak. Hence, this is the origin of its common moniker, “Dumb Cane”. Although, ingestion of this plant is very unlikely to result in death, it does have some rather unpleasant side-effects.

Although ingestion of the plant can be somewhat problematic , Diffenbachias have some very pleasing attributes as well. They have one of the most beautiful combination of yellow, white, and green foliage that you will see in an indoor plant. The plant is also rather robust and does not require a lot of care. It does well in an environment of moderate light.

Neanthe Bella Palm Neanthe Bella Palm

Neanthe bella, parlor palm are also common names for the Chamaedorea elegans. One of the most popular palms today because of its ability to tolerate low light levels, lack of water and just general abuse, which is found in most homes or office buildings, and makes it a perfect plant for dishgarden producers. Mercer Botanicals produces this plant in 3" pots to 8" pots.

More About Neanthe Bella Palms

Neanthe Bella Palm is frequently called the Parlor Palm. It’s one of the best palms to use indoors. It can thrive in low light conditions and it can tolerate a missed watering or two if it’s not left for a prolonged time without water.

Its only drawback is that it may harbor spider mites. To stop this from occurring the plant must be well maintained and healthy to reduce its susceptibility. Examine the underside of its leaves occasionally in order to stop an incipient infestation.

If you believe your plant is being attacked by spider mites clean the leaves with a soapy sponge. Used a soap the doesn’t have any fragrances or other additives in it. Be sure that you also wash the underside of the leaves.

This exceptionally attractive plant has fronds that are smaller than the majority of palms and it has many of them. The fronds will help to form a dense palm that acclimates well to most parts of an office or home. Interior landscapers frequently use them for multi-plant groupings or a stand-alone plant.

Container

When it is full grown a Neanthe Bella Palm may grow to four feet tall. However, it takes a few years to reach this height. T begin with, this palm should be potted in a container that is roughly six inches in diameter and it should have good drainage. As your plant grows, you’ll have to transplant it into a bigger container so it can continue growing.

Lighting

Neanthe Bella Palms grow well in many lighting conditions encountered indoors. A room that has bright or medium light will work the best. Direct sunlight should be avoided, as the plant will not thrive under this condition.

Water

The soil should remain moist, but not overly wet. Never allow the soil to become totally dry. Too much water can cause a variety of problems. The quantity of water required will depend on many things including the lighting, humidity levels, and room temperature. In most cases, you should be able to give the plant water weekly, depending on the amount of time it takes for the soil to dry. Make sure that the palm is not kept in standing water in excess of 15 minutes, since this can encourage pests and cause its roots to rot.

Temperature

The typical indoor temperature of 70 degree Fahrenheit works well for Neanthe Bella Palms. Avoid exposure to heating vents as this will cause the soil to dry quickly and the tips of its leaves to turn brown.
